Can you imagine the endless problem of trying to fill each day and night with some kind of activity or thoughts that can offset the hopeless reality of this everday existence?
Can you imagine not having the means to buy a birthday card from the commissary -- a diet with barely the nutritional essentials to survive -- not having even a sweatshirt to keep you warm in winter - lacking the resources for any legal help?
For imates and loved ones, these are examples of their realities. These burdens can be relieved now by your direct help.
You Can Help an Inmate Today
The mission of Harsh Justice is to stop the suffering of nonviolent inmates who have been inhumanely over-sentenced. Many are serving life without parole sentences for the crimes of drug addiction and poverty. Such sentences violate the Eighth Amendment that prohibits cruel and unusual punishment.
Currently more than 3000 inmates are in US prisons serving life sentences for nonviolent crimes with no hope for parole. Many innocent inmates are serving lesser sentences because they were afraid to go to trial.
For many trials, the deck is heavily stacked against the accused. Sentences are tripled on the average compared to the "plea deals" the accused must otherwise accept - whether guilty or innocent.
Can you imagine as a parent, spouse or loved one, what you are going to talk about when your inmate is able to get to the phone to make a collect call, knowing that this is probably the highlight of his or her day or week?
Can you imagine the trauma of nonviolent incarcerated victims who may spend a majority of the time just worrying about their personal safety in a dangerous world along side violent criminals?
